Metal documentary was a mind-bending journey for Stephen Kijak
'We Are X' will premiere at Sundance

Although filmmaker Stephen Kijak is known for his music documentaries including "Stones in Exile," "Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made of" and "Jaco," a film about the late legendary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius, he didn't know what he was getting into when he was introduced to the Japanese metal band X.

"I had never heard of them before I got called by my producer to do the film, to be perfectly honest," Kijak said during a telephone call from Los Angeles. "It was a whole world of discovery for me, and as someone who has done a lot of films about music and musicians, I was deeply embarrassed to discover a massive gap in my knowledge."

Still, Kijak agreed to make the film, "We Are X," which is part of the Sundance Film Festival's World Documentaries, and embarked on a one-and-a-half-year "mind-bending" journey.

What sold the filmmaker was the band's slogan, "Psychedelic violence crime of visual shock."

"That was an immediate yes for me," he said with a laugh. "I thought whatever that was, I wanted a piece of it. I wanted to know what that was all about."

At first, Kijak was struck by the band's look.

"Obviously the first impression of the band is visual when you see the hair, the makeup and the outrageous styles," he said. "Then I listened to the music, but I had no context, even when I looked up things on YouTube."

What caught Kijak's ear was this classically-based, speedy, heavy, dramatic, over-the-top music that was mostly in Japanese with some English.

"I couldn't believe that I hadn't heard it before, but I wasn't immediately drawn to it, to be perfectly honest," he said.

"I had abandoned metal when I was 13 or 14 when I went new wave."

But the new wave connections helped him relate to the band, especially lead singer Toshi (Deyama) guitarist Sugizo (Sugihara Yuu), and the film's main subject, drummer Yoshiki (Hayashi).

"It was interesting to learn that for most of them David Bowie, rest in peace, was their hero and that they also were inspired by punk and new wave," Kijak said. "When I met Sugizo, we had a long conversation about the band Japan and its bassist Mick Karn."

More connections emerged during their discussions.

"I mean, they are a little older than me, but not by much," Kijak said. "In fact, the first record Toshi, Yoshiki and myself ever bought was Kiss 'Love Gun.' So, we had more in common than I could imagine."

Still the learning curve was steep, especially because the film was being made during a time when X, also known as X Japan, was preparing for a reunion concert of sort at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 11, 2014.

"Meeting Yoshiki was really an inscrutable and enigmatic experience," Kijak said. "He has this soft-spoken quality and is strangely androgynous. And you get this sense that you're in the presence of a Japanese rock god, which doesn't happen every day."

The filmmaker also found Yoshiki to be completely mercurial, yet completely in charge of his whole world.

"There are these circles of chaos that swirl all around him that he seems to orchestrate perfectly to make things happen," Kijak said. "It was a real rush."

A week after the meeting, the filmmaker found himself in Yokohama, Japan, watching the band's warm-up shows for Madison Square Garden (MSG).

"It was the moment when I saw the crowd do the 'X Jump,'" he said. "We're talking a sold-out, 18,000 or 19,000 people at the Yokohama arena with their Glo-sticks making all of these X symbols jumping in unison to this song, and I could not believe what I was witnessing. It was electric and it was an exciting experience, and I felt like I was transported to a parallel universe."

The film includes cameos by music critics, biographers and Marilyn Manson.

"It's interesting because I think Manson and Yoshiki crossed paths after Yoshiki was doing his band Violet UK and did a fashion event in Tokyo that Manson was a part of," Kijak said. "I think Manson got to know Yoshiki apart from the band, but as a creative person and they formed a friendship."

Kijak said Yoshiki is someone Manson could relate to.

"Manson fully admits his persona is a character that he's created, much in the same way Yoshiki puts on different aliases and visual personas he takes on," he said.

Director David Lynch is also in the film by pure accident.

"Yoshiko and Lynch collaborated a long time ago," Kijak said. "Lynch was getting ready to do 'Lost Highway' and Yoshiki commissioned him to do a music video for the song, 'Longing.'"

Kijak found the footage while rummaging through Yoshiki's boxes of video archives.

"Most of it was labeled, but some of the videos were pure mystery," he said with a laugh. "I pulled them out and looked at them and found all of this behind-the-scene footage of that shoot and there was David Lynch with a megaphone directing Yoshiki, standing in the middle of the desert with flames shooting up around him.

"I went, 'Oh, this has got to go in the movie,'" Kijak said. "It wasn't like we interviewed Lynch. He just appeared in an archive. You don't ignore those kind of coincidences."

Finding the connection with Lynch drew Kijak further into Yoshiki's world.

"Lynch is one of my biggest influences cinematically, and to have those connections come together by chance is incredible," he said.

"We Are X" is different than Kijak's other films because of its style.

"There is a surreal and dreamlike quality of the documentary," he said. "It starts off like a traditional rock doc, but we immediately take a turn and try to dive deeper under the surface psychologically and emotionally.

"It's about X Japan, but a portrait of Yoshiki, which is something he doesn't allow the world to see very often," Kijak said. "I will say the biggest challenge was editorial. You have an enormous story with many characters, albums, drama, and you also have a portrait of one man and his life's work. The challenge was to balance those two things and create something that has integrity and authenticity."

Sundance Film Festival will premiere the world documentary "We Are X" at the Prospector Square Theatre, 2200 Sidewinder Dr., on Saturday, Jan. 23, at 2:30 p.m. Additional screenings will be held at the Tower Theatre in Salt Lake City on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m.; the Redstone Cinema 2, 6030 Market Street, on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 10 p.m.; the Yarrow Hotel Theatre, 1800 Park Ave., on Thursday, Jan. 28, at 9 a.m. and the Holiday Village Cinema, 1776 Park Ave., on Friday, Jan. 29, at 9:15 p.m. For more information, visit www.sundance.org.

Shibuya: On now to Arts Beat, with Marie Yanaka. And today, X marks the spot.

Yanaka: That's right. X Japan is one of the country's most enduring rock bands. It's also made a name for itself internationally. A new album and another international tour are in the works for this year.

Shibuya: The front man of X Japan is Yoshiki, I believe.

Yanaka: Yeah, he plays drums, keyboards, and piano and writes songs. He's also been supporting victims of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, visiting schools and meeting with residents face-to-face. Music healed his life, and he hopes it will do the same for others. Here's part of our exclusive interview with him, and an insight into X Japan's long story of light and shadows.

X Japan organized a concert for disaster victims at a small place in Ishinomaki.

Half of the150 people in the audience were locals, there by invitation. The rest of the tickets were auctioned online. The proceeds-- more than 200 thousand dollars --were donated to the community.

"When that thing happened, all the attention from the world was there. But, eventually, you know... People didn't forget, but people not really paying attention to what's going on in Ishinomaki. So, I went to bring the attention back to... So people would talk about what's going on in Ishinomaki."

Since its debut in 1989, the band has turned out both rock tunes heavy on attitude and beautiful ballads. That unique sensibility turned it into a major attraction.

Riding that wave of success, the band set its sights on overseas markets. But somehow, it failed to find its footing.

X Japan broke up in 1997 when Toshi, the vocalist, left the group. Soon afterward, Hide, the guitarist, died.

In 2007, Yoshiki approached Toshi to mend their relationship, and eventually they reunited.

Much to their surprise, the band members found their international reputation had grown during the lost decade. Thank the Internet and social media for that.

Between 2009 and 2011, X Japan took to the stage in sixteen countries and regions.

"During those 10 years we were not really doing a band after we broke up, fans are spreading our music. Not only Japanese fans. Fans in America, Mexico, France, England, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Chili. Everybody is spreading our music to their friends and family, or... We are just so lucky to have those amazing fans. Playing overseas made us realize e really love to perform. As long as there are fans, we would like to go anywhere. We want to rock. That made us realize, how much we like to rock."

The tune 'Without You' is dedicated to the late Hide. The sense of heartache is characteristic of Yoshiki's songs.

"Sometimes I think about the pain we have, we have to go through. The pain can go back to... You know, when I was 10 years old, when I lost my father. I think my father's suicide really affected me, because it's not like an accident, it's not like he was sick or anything. Why did you leave? Why did you leave this world? What's the meaning of living here? Why do we live here? I started thinking. Always like that."

Yoshiki also expressed his feelings for his late father through the music.

"I think pain, that kind of pain. It's always there. You just have to deal with it. That kind of scar will never heal. But together with our fans, we can be positive and keep on going."

In October 2014, X Japan performed at New York's Madison Square Garden. Almost 20 years after its farewell concert at the Tokyo Dome, the band was once again playing Forever Love. The audience was filled with empathy for the band's quest to overcome adversity.

"X Japan is not only five of us. Not only seven of us. I mean, five of us plus Hide and Taiji. All those fans are X Japan as well. So, it's not only us. That's the reason I didn't give up. Doing the band sometimes is not that easy."

In March, the band will play Wembley Arena in the UK, one of the world's most famous rock venues.

Shibuya: This is quite a rare opportunity. I've never seen a long interview like this with him before... and in English!

Yanaka: Yes, our staff member who put this story together, Naomi Umemura, has been looking for a chance to interview him for several years. Last month, he said OK and spoke with us right after a three-hour concert in Nagoya. He talked late into the night about his love for music and for his fans.

Beppu: When will the new album be released?

Yanaka: On March 11th, the 5th anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami.

Shibuya: And on Monday, the 18th, you can watch a shorter version of this report, on Newsline.

I bought new Rimowa's suits cases for this trip, it's not bad. Anyway we got to the Philippines now. Enjoy your dinner.

STAR WARS: Эпизод 7 - размышлизмы (в основном о персонажах)

Многобукв

Размышлизмы о персонажах Эпизода 7… (которых язык не поворачивается назвать героями)

1. Финн.
Совершенно бестолковый штурмовик-сантехник, который единственное, что умеет, громко дышать, чем, собственно, и занимается большую часть экранного времени. Пользы от него на ноль целых хрен десятых. Его поведение ничем не объяснимо… Ах, да, а еще он заботиться только о собственной шкуре – при этом настолько мелкотравчато, что аж противно.
И моё личное ИМХО: он страшный, как атомная война.
2. Рэй.
Мусоршица с заштатной планетенки… Истерична. По ходу фильма неожиданно выясняется, а) что она классный пилот (хотя где могла этому научиться, вопрос без ответа); б) дарование в использовании Силы и светового меча (безо всякой подготовки).
Спойлер: вспоминается мне Эпизод 4 и Лейя, которую пытал Дарт Вейдер… Что-то в ней Сила не проснулась, а вот Рэй обрела свою Силу буквально минут за двадцать: выиграла ментальный поединок с Кайло Реном (тот еще овощ, но хотя бы Силе он обучался – и довольно долго), внушила штурмовику освободить ее (это при том, что еще Бен Кеноби говорил, что Сила воздействует только на слабые умы, да и тренировка для подобного трюка нужна нешуточная), обнаружила в себе способность к перемещению предметов, а заодно и к размахиванию световым мечом (коряво, но даже это по сравнению с «великим ситхом Кайло Реном» смотрелось нормально).
3. По Дэмерон.
Лучший пилот повстанцев. Может, и так (нас ставят перед фактом). Вот только зачем лучший пилот летит на совсем не летное задание (забрать огрызок карты)?
Хмм… Огрызок карты… А Звёздную Кузню потом искать не начнем? А что? Тоже супероружие!
Отдельной строчечкой: характер персонажа полностью переписан с Веджа Антиллеса – вариант книжный.
4. Хан Соло.
Дедушка на высоте! Его фирменный юмор вывозит хотя бы ту часть картины, где он появляется. И попереживать за него успеваешь. Но вот придуманный для него сценаристами финал… дурацкий финал, совсем дурацкий (либо умница Харрисон Форд ужаснулся сценарию и вспомнил фразу, которую произнес еще во время съемок Эпизода 4).
5. Лейя.
Вроде и похожа. Но оценить сложно – ее было слишком мало.
6. Чуи.
Никаких претензий.
7. ВВ-8…
Хм, не твой ли клон я вижу, R2??? Миссия в фильме у него та же, что была у R2 на протяжении шести эпизодов.
8. Маз Каната.
Из новых персонажей, пожалуй, самый адекватный. У нее интересная и не бессмысленная роль.
9. Люк Скайуокер.
Не стану говорить, что являюсь фанатом этого персонажа, но… В Эпизоде 7 из него окончательно и бесповоротно сделали предателя, который, вместо того, чтобы попытаться что-то исправить, когда его ученик перешел на Темную Сторону, попросту ушел в изгнание, оставив друзей и сестру бороться с новым режимом. И это при том, что у Темной Стороны теперь есть свой ситх, а вот у Светлой джедаев даже появиться не может, потому что Люк – последний из них – сбежал.
10. Кайло Рен.
Этот персонаж позиционировался как преемник Дарта Вейдера, а на деле оказался много о себе мнящим истеричным подростком, которого, несмотря на весь апломб и вроде как владение Силой, не побил только ленивый. Вместо того, чтобы устрашать и командовать, он громит свой корабль (хмм… и как только он не развалился?).
Еще одно личное ИМХО как геймера: зачем же было перерисовывать доспехи и маску Дарта Ревана, да еще и так некачественно???
10. Капитан Фазма.
Еще один персонаж ни о чем. В трейлерах она внушала… уважение хотя бы. А оказалось, что это просто мандалорианские доспехи… Пленить ее на ее же территории смогла парочка прохвостов.
11. Сноук.
При взгляде на это существо возникает только два вопроса – кто ты, и как пришел к власти??? Ни истории персонажа, ни объяснения его статуса в фильме нет. Нам просто предлагают поверить, что он нереально крут, он правит… ах, да, и он склонил на Темную Сторону Кайло Рена.
Голлум захватил власть над Вселенной! *демонический смех*

Вроде никого не забыла…

Еще парочка мыслей уже не о персонажах:
- Новый Порядок комичен и карикатурен. Не ясно, как всё это может оставаться у власти 30 лет.
- У каждого штурмовика с собой есть бензопила, покрытая кортозисом, чтобы драться с противником, имеющим световой меч.
- Татуин, родной, как же ты мог не появиться на протяжении целого эпизода, а ведь буквально связывал две предыдущие трилогии.
- Республика вроде и есть… Но ее как бы нет.
- Вселенский размах прошлых ЗВ схлопнулся до небольшой драчки внутри одной семьи…
- Силу можно познать, не обучаясь. Вообще не обучаясь. Ни минуты. Не пойму уж, магия это или мистика.
А еще точно также и с той же скоростью можно обучиться сражаться на световых мечах.
И зачем только джедаи прошлого обучались годами??? Когда можно – РАЗ!!! – и ты уже великий боец, наделенный Силой и мастерством владения световым мечом.
- Ни философской, ни политической подоплеки в фильме нет, как нет и семейных (да и просто человеческих) ценностей.
